“Georgian Dream” as an AfD Fan Club? An Embarrassing Endorsement of Germany’s Far-Right Party

There are moments when you truly wonder whether irony is still alive in Tbilisi—or whether it has long since overdosed on propaganda. The latest example: the ruling party “Georgian Dream” has publicly expressed sympathy for none other than Germany’s Alternative for Germany (AfD)—yes, the very party that was officially classified as far-right extremist in Germany just recently.

And as if that weren’t grotesque enough, party representative Levan Machavariani praised the AfD as a “truly patriotic force” bravely standing up against the so-called “Deep State”—a term usually reserved for the darkest corners of conspiracy-theory Telegram channels. Apparently, “Georgian Dream’s” “patriotic struggle” now extends all the way to the political fringes of Germany.

A Party That Questions Georgia’s Territorial Integrity

It seems “Georgian Dream” couldn’t care less that the AfD is not only anti-EU but has also openly challenged Georgia’s territorial integrity. In 2019, AfD MPs Stefan Keuter and Gunnar Lindemann traveled to Russian-occupied Abkhazia as “election observers”—a clear violation of international policy and a blatant affront to Georgia’s sovereignty.

The fact that this party is now being celebrated as an ally by “Georgian Dream” speaks volumes. Apparently, the Georgian government is looking for international friends in places where the rule of law and European values hold no sway.

A “Patriotic Alliance” Against the West?

In Machavariani’s logic, the AfD isn’t a problem—it’s an inspiration: “Precisely because the AfD doesn’t obey the Deep State, it’s a thorn in the side of the global warmongers,” he enthused. One wonders who in Tbilisi seriously believes that a party advocating for Germany’s withdrawal from the EU could ever be a reliable partner for Georgia’s European future.

After all, Germany’s current coalition agreement explicitly states that it will support only those pro-European forces in Georgia that are clearly committed to democracy, the rule of law, and European integration. Meanwhile, “Georgian Dream” flirts with forces that want exactly the opposite.

A Slap in the Face for Georgia’s European Aspirations

That “Georgian Dream” harbors sympathies for a party officially deemed anti-constitutional in Germany is not just politically foolish—it’s a direct affront to Georgia’s European partners. It sends a clear message: we’re not looking for friends in Brussels or Berlin; we’re looking for accomplices among those who seek to undermine Europe.

It’s a bitter irony: while the majority of the Georgian population firmly believes in EU membership, their own government is playing footsie with political forces determined to dismantle the European dream.

Perhaps Tbilisi’s leadership would be better off spending less time in conspiracy-laden comment sections—and instead reading Germany’s latest report from the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Spoiler: Anyone who invokes the AfD as a “patriotic force” clearly hasn’t grasped the meaning of democracy.

And for Germany’s partners wondering which forces in Georgia are truly democratic, pro-European, and committed to the rule of law—this episode provides at least one clear answer: unfortunately, it’s not the government.
